At Metropolitan’s Institute of Graphic Design, the three specializations of graphic arts include electronic illustration, illustration and graphic design make up a professional group. They are very similar in many respects, as each is related to art, creativity and specialized knowledge yet each focuses on a different area in the range of graphic arts. How should an applicant interested in the graphic arts choose from among these specializations?

For those interested in the theory and practice of image composition, with the necessary manual ability, illustration is the appropriate choic.  Those interested in new electronics, computer-based image composition possibilities should apply for electronic illustration. Those excited by the world of communication and creativity would be best suited for graphic design. Of course these concepts do not exclude one another – the difference is merely one of emphasis. The common goal of the training program for all three specializations is to train students who are sure to be able to adapt to today’s torrent of symbols and images and compose and convey visual images of artistic merit in their own fields.
